Treasure Hidden in Hakka Villages - Special Exhibition for Walkers along the Mountain and Sea Lines

Miaoli Hakka Cultural Park has been presenting “Treasure Hidden in Hakka Villages ─ Special Exhibition for Walkers along the Mountain and Sea Lines” since February 8, 2016.

Using the development process of transportation systems along the mountain and sea lines as the background, this exhibition is divided into five major sub-exhibition zones, namely “Kickoff‧Hakka Village," "Visit‧Mountain & Sea," "Things‧Beauty," "Arts‧All Trades," "Journey‧Memory." This exhibition aims to showcase how the hardworking Hakka people has been engaged in all major industries in Taiwan, such as the camphor industry that has once contributed to 70% of world production, the lacquerware industry that played a prominent role in postwar export, the rush weaving industry that has been a sideline business for centuries in the coastal region, and other livelihood necessities, including charcoal, salt , rice, etc. By making the best use of natural resources, the Hakka people have been creating a prosperous homeland little by little and bit by bit.

To transport mountain resources to the trading ports, people have begun to construct transportation systems since the late 19^th century. From the walking trails used by porters to the construction of various kinds of roads and railways, the transport development history of mountain and sea lines is also a Taiwan’s industrial development history, in which clearly marked are Hakka villages, railways, economics and humanities. This exhibition shows you how skillful the Hakka people were in making crafts, how they have passed on the skills and craftsmanship from generation to generation. It helps you better understand their century-old life wisdom and their cultural connotation of adaptability to the environment, respect for Nature and care for everything.
