Introduction of The Hakka Photographer: Seeing the Hakka Collection Exhibition

　The ‘Taiwan Hakka Museum’ of the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center, Hakka Affairs Council is famed as the ‘international Hakka research and industry communication center’. Through curation and research of cultural heritage, Hakka cultural knowledge management, display of communication and interpretation, and Hakka cultural development services, the Museum supports research and teaching while preserve complete Hakka cultural assets, thereby acting as a window for Taiwan’s multicultural exchanges and dialogues.

　　Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center, Hakka Affairs Council completed the record of photo studios in Hakka villages along the Zhanggang River in 2017’s ‘Survey of Hakka Village Photo Studioes and Collection of Photographer’s Digital Work’. The project collected photos from four photo studios including Nanzhuang Yuguang Photo Studio, Nanzhuang Nanmei Photo Studio, Toufen Lin Photo Studio and Toufen Coral Photo Studio. A total of more than 4,000 photo studio extracts and around 200 cultural relics of the Hakka village were collected. Through cultural relics of the old photo studios, literature and field investigation, digital imagery, object inventory and themed interviews, the history of Hakka village life circle has been constructed. It is found that Hakka village photo studios are closely related to local settlements. The photos captured the faces of local men, women and children, preserving the unique celebrations of Hakka villages; in local photo studios, in addition to the preservation of images, they also record the development of local life circles and traces of humanity; acting as witnesses of time and space of Taiwan’s photography history.

　　The exhibition is named ‘The Hakka Photographer’ as it embeds the curation and display of Hakka collections, leading visitors into the world and atmosphere of old photo studios in Hakka villages, thereby experiencing the historical track of these Hakka villages. Through pieces of precious images of cultural assets, visitors are introduced to the unique Hakka culture; the photos not only record the growth of many Hakkas, they also act as witnesses of the life of the lands of Taiwan, allowing all to experience the beauty of simple and precious imageries.
