A Dialogue with Maps: Stories Behind the National Archives’ Maps
From: July 11–December 1, 2019
At: 5th Special Exhibition Hall
Maps are an assemblage of space and time that use simple lines and symbols to present visualizations of what is known and unknown. The National Archives’ collection contains large numbers of maps; what is drawn is not just space but also contains historical significance, converging into the stories belonging to Taiwan.
This exhibition is the first instance of the National Development Council’s National Archives Administration working together with the Hakka Affairs Council’s Hakka Culture Development Center to select 60 maps from the National Archives spanning the period between 1910 and 1971, from the mapmakers’ perspective using different scales and spatial structure as the curatorial concept, leading the visitors from Taiwan’s global location, the island, district, city, and then on down to streets or particular sites, in various scales of geographical space, to experience history and to open a dialogue of time and space between the visitors and the maps of the national archives.
