Others - Abundant Resources in Hakka Settlements-Special Exhibition on Camphor Industry
From the Ming Cheng Monarch era, camphor had been one of the three treasures in Taiwan, as well as one of the staple merchandise trades in the early age of Taiwan; as a result, it played a pivotal role in economic and regional development in Hakka settlements of the northern and central Taiwan. Afterwards, camphor wood carving in Sanyi developed into a crucial position in Hakka economy, and then in response to global competition, the wood carving industries transformed into cultural, creative and recreational industries, for instance, the DIY wood carving of ducks and facial paintings in Sanyi etc. As a result, the Hakka group became the witness to the development and transformation of the camphor industry. Apart from displaying the inheritance of traditional industries and cultivating the cultural visions for the next generation, the exhibition also facilitates the general public to understand the culture, technology, development, and transformation of the camphor industry.
