On December 28, 1988, Hakka predecessors and various ethnic groups stood out for Hakka language and launched the "We want our mother language back". To commemorate the epoch-making day, the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of the Hakka Affairs Council has especially held a special exhibition at the 30th anniversary of the movement "We want our mother language back" from December 28, 2018 to June 30, 2019 at the Taiwan Hakka Museum.

The theme of the exhibition is “Cherish Mother Language!” as the communication message and image, so that once you step into the venue, you can feel the cute and interesting words of Hakka language; the entrance image area is especially designed with an action book cart which led by the bronze statue of the founding father. On the cart are Hakka books and children's picture books of all ages, as well as mother tongue textbooks of other ethnic groups which they serve not only as interactive pictures for parents and children to take pictures but also hope that everyone will remember the predecessors’ intention to fight for the right to speak the mother tongue. And with the anticipation that “Inheritance of mother language is a responsibility for everyone”, we should pass the language down to the next generation by speaking the mother tongue with our children together, and spreading the voices of different ethnic groups to enrich Taiwanese multiculturalism. The main exhibition hall is divided into four stages of revival of the Hakka language. It is easy for the people to enter and participate in the 30-year-old story, including the "Keep Silent" to the two times of "Speak only Mandarin Movement" from the Japanese Rule to the martial law. It decreased the people who spoke the mother tongue of all ethnic groups in Taiwan; later, "Speaking for" collected from the underground and the legitimate ethnic radio stations about the process that the Taiwan Hakka Public Affairs Association and the Hakka clubs in the colleges and universities fought for “We want our mother language back“. And then the "recording" shows Taiwan's new literature, which was gradually written in the mother tongue after the 1990s. Finally, through "Learning", it shows the face of today's mother-tongue education about research and promotion. In addition to the contemporary situational presentation, the exhibition area will also display key historical documents, such as the National Language Enforcement Committee's prevention and control and preparation of tables, the Ministry of Education's introduction of the Taiwan Province's extraordinary period of education program implementation methods and other precious historical data files, etc.; We planned to set the radio stations as the interactive device, so visitors can record their voice and images. They can use QR-Cord to take away the image of being a DJ, or just leave the file there as a Hakka cultural asset.

The chairman of the Hakka Affairs Council Li Yongde said: "As a modern Hakka, we should cherish the hard-won right of speaking mother tongue, and take the inheritance of the language and the promotion of culture as our responsibility. We should always think about what is the contribution of Hakkas in all fields in Taiwan or around the world. And we hope to focus on this part. For example, Hakka literature has affected the literary world of Taiwan so deeply that it could be a representative of Taiwanese literature. At present, the Hakka Affairs Council is trying to translate the classic works by some important Hakka writers into different languages in order to see that one day there is a Nobel Prize in Hakka literature, with which the world will recognize Hakka culture for real."

The Director-General of the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Centre, Ho Jin-ling, also said that in the future, we will continue to hold the commemorative exhibitions or events related to the mother voice files and the mother tongue movements to promote the importance of the mother tongue in different modes. This special exhibition is one of the series activities of the Hakka Affairs Council national 30th Anniversary. However, unlike the previous static curatorial, in this exhibition we have incorporated and presented many Hakka voices. We have collected audio files from thousands of people and will play them in turns in the exhibition at the entrance of the museum, including Hakka dialects by Hakka celebrities, overseas Hakkas or foreigners, Taiwanese four-sea peace, and the mother tongue of other ethnic groups, including more than 1,300 Hakka voice files. Today at the press conference of opening ceremony, the students of Wenshan Elementary School in Miaoli County reappeared the campus situation "Speaking Madeiran and the ban on the mother tongue" in that year and performed a short drama played with humorous and funny mouth to show the period of the "Keep Silent"; Zeng Zhongwei, who has ever performed alternative service in the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center and also was one of the best Hakka singers in the 2017 Golden Melody Awards, was leading the choir of Zhuo Lan Elementary School to sing a "He Cheng Ji Ji (禾呈記趣)" with the sea and land tune, showing that the Hakka predecessors were fighting for "Speaking” their mother tongue and made every effort for “Recording". Thirty years later, we can learn to sing the Hakka songs on campus. Through the dynamic performance art and the exhibition content, we hope that all visitors will have more conversation and work together to contribute to the mother tongue.
