Hakka Affairs Council Minister Lee Yung-de attended a press conference on the 2019 Liudui Marathon in Taipei on June 14, extending a sincere invitation to marathoners from around the world to join this event and experience the beauty of Hakka villages in the Liudui region. The 2019 edition is themed “Hakka Power” and will be taking place in Kaohsiung’s Meinong District on Oct. 20.

Lee explained that many historic attractions across the Liudui region — including the Shihzihtou Canal (獅子頭水圳), Meinong Water Bridge (美濃水橋), Meinong Old Bridge (美濃舊橋), East Gate Tower (東門樓), Guanshan Temple (廣善堂), and Jingzi Pavilion (敬字亭) — can be seen from the running route. Moreover, the natural glamour of Meinong Lake (美濃湖) and Xinwei Forest Park (新威森林公園) will also captivate the runners, he added.

Director of Hakka Culture Development Center Ho Chin-liang (何金樑) said that the marathon aims to not only unify the local communities of Liudui, but also attract visitors to immerse themselves in the enchantment of Liudui. He also encouraged contenders to wear outfits or accessories featuring Hakka elements to compete for the “best costume” title that comes with prize money.

A music concert will be held on the evening of Oct. 19, and fantastic performances will be brought by Meinong-born singer Lin Sheng-xiang (林生祥) along with other excellent bands. The runners will also enjoy Hakka music before the competition begins on Oct. 20. There are three categories available: 42.195 KM, 25 KM, and 5 KM, and the entry fees are NT$800, NT$600, and NT$300, respectively. After the race, a farmers market will provide participants with a good opportunity to learn more about local agricultural products. Registration for the marathon is now open through Aug. 20, and everyone is truly welcomed to run and experience beautiful Liudui in southern Taiwan.
