The Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) of the Hakka Affairs Council and Japan National Museum of Ethnology co-host the exhibition “Hakka and Japan: Another History of East Asian Relations Created by Chinese Overseas” in celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary. THCDC Director-General Ho Chin-liang (何金樑) highlighted that this exhibition showcases valuable artifacts from Taiwan. He expressed gratitude to the event partners for their support, which made possible the overseas debut of items like century-old shellac discs and Hakka architectural models. The exhibition opened on September 9, commemorating the Japan National Museum of Ethnology’s 50th birthday this year.

Commenting on the event, Ho Chin-liang remarked, “Only through continuous action can dreams be realized.” He noted that this international collaboration, starting from the signing of a MoU in 2017, has been materialized after six years of dedicated effort and research contributions from the THCDC, anthropologists, Hakka culture researchers, and Japanese scholars and experts.

The THCDC expressed its appreciation to the donors of Hakka cultural relics and digital resources, as well as to the local organizations and institutions that loaned their collections for this exhibition, including the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Chiayi, Fenglin Township Office in Hualien, Qionglin Elementary School in Hsinchu, the management committee of the Old House of the Siiao Family in Jiadong Township, Pingtung, and the SMC Publishing Inc.

Ho Chin-liang also extended thanks to Masashi Nara (奈良雅史), associate professor at the Japan National Museum of Ethnology, for his oversight during the packaging and transportation of the exhibits in early August. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the overseas Hakka community in Japan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Osaka for their support in promoting Taiwanese Hakka culture.

“Hakka and Japan: Another History of East Asian Relations Created by Chinese Overseas” is open from September 5 to December 3 at the Japan National Museum of Ethnology. Through this exhibition, the THCDC hopes to foster a greater international appreciation of Taiwanese Hakka culture.
