Taiwan Hakka Museum hosts Japanese scholar for Hakka academic exchange

To promote international Hakka academic exchange, the Taiwan Hakka Museum hosted Professor Hideaki Kikuchi (菊池秀明) of the International Christian University (ICU) on Mar. 17. Last year, Professor Kikuchi participated in an exhibition titled “Hakka and Japan: Another History of East Asian Relations Created by Chinese Overseas (客家與日本:海外華人編織的另一部東亞關係史),” co-organized by the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) of the Hakka Affairs Council, the National Museum of Ethnology (NME) of Japan, and Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) in September 2024. During the exhibition, he expressed a strong interest in visiting the Taiwan Hakka Museum for further Hakka studies, which was realized this year.

The Hakka Affairs Council anticipates that THCDC will continue to expand opportunities for inter-museum exchanges and international collaborations to promote Hakka culture.

THCDC Director-General Ho Chin-liang (何金樑) expressed his honor in receiving Professor Kikuchi and other Taiwanese academicians as he guided them through the museum’s permanent exhibition. He also welcomed international scholars interested in visiting Taiwan to study Hakka culture, expressing his hope to foster integration between Taiwan’s Hakka community and the global community. He emphasized the importance of ongoing international collaboration and exchange.

Director-General Ho also announced that the Liugdui Hakka Cultural Park will host a Hakka Bayin music workshop on May 18, in celebration of International Museum Day. This event will feature Hakka Bayin music ensembles and researchers from the Liugdui region in southern Taiwan. Additionally, the Center will collaborate with the National Museum of Taiwan History (NMTH) to organize a commemorative event for the 130th anniversary of the Yiwei War (乙未之役) on May 25. In August, a symposium on Taiwan's historical recordings will be co-hosted by NMTH and the THCDC, with Deputy Director Shota Fukuoka (福岡正太) of Japan’s National Museum of Ethnology in attendance.

The Center remains committed to fostering dialogue between domestic and international research on Hakka culture. It aims to identify key topics for future Hakka studies in order to deepen understanding of Hakka communities around the world.
