Celebrating the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) under the Hakka Affairs Council organized a series of events from Feb. 17 to 21 at the Taiwan Hakka Museum. Located in Tongluo, a mountainous township in Miaoli County, the museum houses a wide range of exhibitions and features expansive outdoor park landscapes. It attracts over 10,000 visitors annually during the Lunar New Year holiday, particularly for its scenic photography spots.

Under this year’s theme of promoting Hakka-language speaking, the THCDC presented eight activities, including the popular “Luck Challenges,” in which participants could win Hakka-themed decorations by completing three tasks. Meanwhile, 15 performances were staged in the outdoor areas, featuring music, dance, and street acts. The museum also organized soap-making and pickle-making workshops, inviting participants to create their own Lunar New Year gifts.

Other highlights included a Jenga game using red tortoise cakes, with the daily MVP receiving a smart tablet as a prize; and a hide-and-seek game in which participants had opportunities to win gifts upon completing designated missions. A riddle-guessing game, held exclusively on the second day of the festivities, attracted over 100 participants. In keeping with Lunar New Year tradition, the number of red packets distributed was increased to 4,000 this year, which visitors could receive by taking part in mini-games.

In addition, the museum launched a character-collecting activity, allowing participants to gather Chinese characters forming auspicious phrases. These could be exchanged for prizes by joining Lunar New Year activities or making purchases at the museum. Prizes included Hakka-themed gifts, an iPhone 17, and a Switch 2. Designed for visitors of all ages, including non-Hakka speakers, the programs saw full attendance at most sessions.

THCDC Director-General Hsieh Sheng-hsin (謝勝信) noted that the Lunar New Year is a significant festival that provides an important opportunity to bring Hakka culture and language closer to the public. He stated that the events were designed to encourage family participation across generations, offering festive performances, hands-on craft experiences, and interactive games. Through these activities, participants could naturally engage with and learn about Hakka culture and language. He also invited the public to visit Hakka villages during the Lunar New Year to experience the richness of Hakka culture. More information is available on the official THCDC website and the Taiwan Hakka Museum’s Facebook page.
