The development of tin mining in Southeast Asia, acts as a driving force for Hakka people to leave their homes and work overseas. Hakka migrants from China’s Hoklo and Guangdong provinces such as Meizhou, Fuichi and Dingzhou become rich because of tin mining, thereby influencing the urban development of modern Malaysia. At the same time, these migrants invested generously in public affairs and establishing townhall for villagers. Such development of tin mining in Southeast Asia are relatively different from how Taiwanese Hakkas mainly rely on forestry and farming as their businesses, thereby having established traditional cognitions of share-holding worships and religious organizations. This exhibition focuses on the changes in the meaning of ‘tin’ to present the cultural changes of Malaysia Hakka societies, introducing the public to how the Hakkas have developed different life appearances in various places after having migrated from their hometowns. It is hoped that the public can have a more diverse understanding of ‘Hakka’ culture from how Malaysian Hakkas have undergone multi-facet developments and changes through tin mining.
