With the change of the concept about gender equality, many Hakka clans have begun to think outside the box of traditions and made some changes to clan ceremonies or folk rituals. They gradually put emphasis on the status and rights of family females. For example, they open the opportunity for females to serve as a master of the ceremony, worshiping the female ancestors, enshrinement of females in the ancestral tombs, and even recording females into their own genealogy. It is really a great progress for the promotion of female’s rights and has become the best social model.
The Hakka Cultural Development Center began to check some issues since 2018, such as female memorial tablets, enshrinement of females in the ancestral tombs, female master of the ceremony/ female teachers by visiting relevant clans in the Hakka region and by deeply understanding the promotion process and the difficulties they may have encountered. It is hoped that through interviews and case sharing, more clans can also understand such impressive process and social pulse.
Emphasizing gender equality and constructing cultural etiquette without gender discrimination is what all of us need to work together. We hope that such issues as worshiping the female ancestors and enshrinement of females in the ancestral tombs may gradually ferment and spread around so that people can better understand the current practices and cases of the Hakka clans, and build a clan Inter-networks through mutual exchange and learning.
The Hakka Cultural Development Center hopes to share with the public the results of the initial visit to the clans in the northern region. Therefore, it will hold the forum on "Hakka Social Rituals: Female Ancestral tablet, Enshrinement in the Ancestral Tombs and Female Masters of Ceremony " at the " Hakka Culture Museum of Taiwan" in Miaoli at 2 pm of June 19th, 2019. Ceremonial experts, clan representatives of setting female ancestral tablets, scholars and experts will be invited to share the promotion process and experience of setting female ancestral tablets, enshrinement of females in the ancestral tombs, and a female master of ceremony.
Welcome the interested families, the general public or research scholars to participate in the forum and exchange your opinions.
