In collaboration with the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), the Paper Windmill Theatre performed "Rain Horse," a theatrical production for children, at the Main Plaza of the National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH) in Taipei on March 12 and 13.

“Rain Horse” was originally scheduled for 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Fortunately, the theatrical production, a newly created Hakka fairy tale integrated with the Hakka language and songs for children, can finally be presented in front of the audience this March.

Adapted from Hsiao Yeh’s picture book of the same title, “Rain Horse” is the latest work by the Paper Windmill Theatre in 2021. The presentation of this show combined huge installation devices with digital images, water and fire special effects, singing, dancing, and stunts.

According to Hsiao Yeh, although his parents are of Hakka descent, he admits that he has little understanding of the ethnic culture. Then he gradually realized that he already put Hakka elements in the literary work, including the ethnic group’s coexistence with disasters and its search for historical roots.

A huge, imposing statue of the main character Rain Horse was unveiled at the NTCH plaza, catching people’s eye. The over-three-storey-high and 13-meter-long giant blue horse with rainbow mane and tail has been the biggest theatrical installation design in Taiwan in a decade.

The eye-catching statue of the giant blue horse will be exhibited at the plaza in front of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall from March 25 to 28. More information can be found at the official website of the Paper Windmill Theatre.
