On February 13, 2025, our center held the second classic reading session for Phase III of “Mentorship Program for Collecting and Documenting Hakka Village Histories in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli.” This was an online event which attracted approximately 40 passionate participants eager to engage in cultural and historical writing.

This reading session, themed “Stories Etched in Your Hearts,” featured a special lecture by Mr. Lin Chih-Bin, author of The Heart of Lieyu: The People and Stories of Donglin. Mr. Lin shared his extensive experience in writing village histories and offered insights on his creative process. With vivid and engaging narration, Mr. Lin guided participants on a journey through the Donglin settlement in Kinmen, tracing its transformation from “Donglin Village” to the “Donglin Community.” He provided a detailed analysis of the historical context behind the community’s formation, explored the region’s economic shifts from relying on unpredictable harvests to depending on military-related livelihoods, and highlighted the unique socio-cultural traits captured in the local saying, “The beauty of the neighborhood lies in harmony—good neighbors, one big family.” His presentation vividly showcased the resilience and wisdom of the coastal people in adapting to various environmental challenges.

Amid lively exchanges and discussions, participants not only gained fresh perspectives on writing village histories but also developed a deeper appreciation toward the importance of preserving local culture and history. Mr. Lin encouraged frontline village history writers to uphold the spirit of honest documentation. He emphasized the value of deeply engaging with community residents to foster a strong sense of local identity and awaken communal consciousness, ensuring that the stories of Hakka villages are passed down through generations. He remarked, “Writing village history is a delicate and emotional process. Every story is a cultural code of the village, which takes patience and care to decipher.” It is hoped that this reading session will inspire more individuals dedicated to join the initiative of recording village histories and work together to preserve the invaluable cultural memories of Hakka communities.
