On Thursday, March 6, 2025, the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of the Hakka Affairs Council held the “Presentation of Survey Results on Hakka Cultural Resources in Zhongli District, Taoyuan” at the Bali Community Activity Center in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City. The event showcased the rich findings of this cultural resource survey to the public.
The presentation was presided over by Ho Chin-Liang, Director of the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of the Hakka Affairs Council. Lin Tso-Chia, Chief Secretary of the Hakka Affairs Bureau of the Taoyuan City Government, and Huang Lien-Ying, Village Chief of Zhiba Village in Zhongli District were also present. They expressed their gratitude to local residents and community associations for their strong support, which was instrumental in the successful completion of the survey.
As one of the most prominent Hakka settlements in the Taoyuan area, Zhongli District has undergone a transformation from an agricultural society to an industrial and commercial hub. Despite rapid urbanization, Hakka culture remains deeply rooted in local life, forming an integral part of the community’s cultural foundation. During the presentation, the survey team vividly showcased the diverse cultural resources preserved in Zhongli using images and presentations. They also introduced the handbook Hakka Cultural Resource Survey: Cultural Overview of Zhongli District, Taoyuan City, which systematically documents the district’s rich Hakka heritage. The handbook covers topics such as traditional settlements and architecture; the historical use of ponds and irrigation canals; religious practices involving deities such as the Three Great Emperor-Officials, muniang (Mother Goddesses), wanggong (Lord Kings), and bogong (Earth Gods); and various folk customs and festivals. These elements illustrate how the Hakka way of life continues to thrive amid urban development in Zhongli, embodying the unique cultural landscape of a “metropolitan Hakka village.”
To showcase the vitality of local culture, the event featured a vibrant drum performance by the “Qiansui Troupe” of the Bali Community Development Association. In addition, Chairperson Chiu Yun-Jin shared the traditional craft of straw weaving, demonstrating how it can be reimagined through creative design to reflect contemporary aesthetics. This successful blend of preservation and innovation highlighted the living heritage and evolving spirit of Hakka culture.
The presentation also welcomed the participation of respected local leaders, including Li Yung-Fang, Village Chief of Qingxi Village; Liu Wu Yin-Mei, Village Chief of Xinghe Village; Yeh Ching-Wang, Village Chief of Xingnan Village; Chen Yi-Ching, Chairperson of the Shandong Community Development Association; Chan Chao-Mao, Chairperson of the Yuemei Community Development Association; and Wu Hui-Ling, Director of Bali Elementary School. Their presence underscored the strong community support and deep commitment to preserving Zhongli’s Hakka cultural heritage.
Our center will continue to promote the survey and preservation of Hakka cultural resources across Taiwan. Through in-depth research and active community engagement, we aim to safeguard local cultural memories and showcase the rich humanistic heritage and everyday wisdom of the Hakka people.
