On May 12, 2025, the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of the Hakka Affairs Council hosted the second writing exchange session for the third phase of the Mentorship Program for Collecting and Documenting Hakka Village Histories in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli at the Taiwan Hakka Culture Museum. The event brought together 7 teams of village history writers from Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli to share their valuable experiences and heartfelt reflections gained through fieldwork, elder interviews, and the writing process since the launch of Phase III of the program. Approximately 50 participants attended the session, unfolding a warm and enriching atmosphere that showcased not only the vibrant literary energy but also the strong sense of community connection rooted in Hakka villages.
The event featured special guest speakers: Associate Professor Wang Cheng-Wen from the Department of History at Tung Hai University and Assistant Professor Huang Hsin-Yang from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Drawing from their respective expertise in historical practice and cultural studies, the two scholars offered insightful responses to the challenges faced by village history authors, ranging from data collection and content organization to narrative structure. Furthermore, they shared how meaningful writing perspectives can be drawn from local contexts and everyday details. Through dynamic, two-way discussions and the sharing of experiences among writers, the session underscored that village history writing is not merely an individual literary endeavor but a collective cultural action that fosters community participation and reinforces local identity. Many participants took the opportunity to express their emotional connections to their villages, allowing the histories behind each story to be genuinely felt and understood.
The event also received strong support from local government agencies. Ho Shuai-Sheng, Section Chief of the Hakka Affairs Section, Department of Civil Affairs, Hsinchu County Government, and Tan Hsiao-Chuan, Deputy Executive Director of the Baoshan Township Office in Hsinchu County, attended the session in person. Both officials commended the village history program for its significant contributions to preserving local memories and advancing cultural heritage transmission.
