The Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) of the Hakka Affairs Council was invited by Taiwan Historica to attend the award ceremony for “Published Documents and Books of 2025” on Sept. 25. This year, the THCDC received one commendation and five honorable mentions.
Committed to the historical research and study of Taiwanese and global Hakka culture, the commendation-winning publication “The Katung War in Liugdui in 1895 (1895六堆茄苳腳保臺戰役)” is a result of these long-term efforts. The book explores the resistance against Japanese colonizers in the Liugdui area during the Yiwei War.
One of the honorable mentions, “Cheng Jung-hsing: A Life’s Dedication to Hakka Music and Opera (采茶歌隨八音來:鄭榮興的客家音樂戲曲傳承志業)” documents the life story of Hakka music and opera researcher Cheng Jung-hsing, showcasing the rich diversity of Hakka culture.
Two honorable mentions, “The Global Distribution of Hakka Cuisine (華人靈魂料理—客家飲食的寰宇分佈)” and “Global Hakka: Hakka Identity in the Remaking (全球客家:重構中的客家認同),” explore Hakka culture in a global context through food and cultural identity, inviting readers to view Hakka culture from different perspectives.
The remaining two honorable mentions are academic publications – “Bulletin of THCDC (No.5)” and “Liugdui 300 (書寫六堆300–從歷史出發的多元族群共榮).” This marks the second time the “Bulletin of THCDC,” launched in 2021, received this recognition. “Liugdui 300” is a collection of papers presented at the 2021 International Hakka Conference – Three Hundred Years in Liugdui, organized by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.
THCDC Director-General Ho Chin-liang (何金樑) noted that since 2022, THCDC members and partners have actively been participating in Taiwan Historica’s Published Documents and Books Awards. He emphasized that receiving these honors provides great encouragement for the center’s ongoing efforts to promote and preserve Hakka culture. Ho added that the THCDC will continue to foster greater exchange with international communities so that people from diverse backgrounds and fields can better appreciate Hakka culture and collaborate in its promotion.
