Today (the 24th), the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of the Hakka Affairs Council held the Hakka Lifetime Contribution Award – Ms. Huang Juan Literary Sharing Session and Hakka Writers’ Donated Artifacts Special Exhibition at the Taiwan Hakka Museum. Through Ms. Huang Juan’s literary sharing session and the opening of the special exhibition showcasing donated artifacts from Hakka writers, the event not only highlighted Ms. Huang’s profound contributions to Hakka literature and her remarkable life journey but also brought Hakka literary collections to the forefront through engaging dialogues with writers, offering deeper insight into the development and achievements of Hakka literature in Taiwan.

Chairperson Ku Hsiu-fei of the Hakka Affairs Council remarked that Ms. Huang Juan is a pioneering female novelist of Taiwan’s epic river novels, and her Hakka literary works embody profound conscience and truth, authentically reflecting societal realities. The Council has long emphasized the promotion of literature, actively advancing literary achievements through diverse channels. By translating works into multiple languages, it enables a broader audience to appreciate and understand Hakka literature. In recent years, in response to contemporary trends, the Council has also integrated mediums such as theater, comics, and audio picture books to present literary works in more accessible and engaging forms. As early as 2019, Ms. Huang donated more than 300 valuable artifacts—including manuscripts and books from her treasured collection—to the Center. Today, she has once again donated important medals and other items, demonstrating her deep commitment to cultural preservation and closely linking her personal achievements with the value of Taiwan’s Hakka culture. In doing so, the spirit of her literary work continues to be preserved, revitalized, and celebrated.

Today’s program was rich and immersive, offering what felt like a full-scale feast of Hakka literature. The event featured an in-depth dialogue with Ms. Huang Juan and fellow literary figures, including writer Fu Yin-chiao, who shared their journeys in Hakka literary creation—spanning international horizons and navigating the upheavals of changing times. The program also included a compelling Hakka-language staged reading by Mo Li Theater, featuring an excerpt titled “The Sea Episode” from Ms. Huang’s epic novel Footprints of History. In the play, the line “𫣆一定做毋得改名姓!” (We must never change our names!)—short yet resolute in Hakka— powerfully conveys the steadfast struggle of Taiwanese people to preserve their identity and cultural roots amid historical turbulence, allowing the audience to deeply feel the emotional strength embedded in Huang Juan’s literary work.

Director Ho Chin-liang of the Hakka Affairs Council’s Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center stated that since the Center launched its physical collection of Hakka cultural artifacts in 2017, it has continuously received strong support from all sectors. A particularly proud milestone came in 2019, when Ms. Huang Juan generously donated a large collection of precious artifacts. Today, returning from the United States, Ms. Huang has donated important medals and other items, providing the Center with renewed inspiration and momentum. This donation not only enriches the value of Hakka cultural assets but also fosters greater collaboration among scholars, enabling the careful preservation, interpretation, and management of these invaluable cultural treasures.

The Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center also curated the special exhibition “Three Lives in Words: Donated Artifacts from Hakka Writers Huang Juan, Tseng Kuei-hai, and Chan Bing” using related items from its collections. Centered on the theme of “life,” the exhibition invites visitors to step behind the words and into the lived experiences they reflect, illustrating how literature intertwines with history, land, and individual lives. The exhibition encourages audiences to engage more deeply with Hakka literary works, highlighting that literature is not only meant to be read but also preserves the lived experiences of its creators. The event celebrated the rich and inspiring life journey of Ms. Huang Juan and also served as a significant cultural tribute to Hakka literature in Taiwan.
