THCDC holds activities to celebrate International Museum Day in Liudui

The Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, a subsidiary of the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) under the Hakka Affairs Council, held a press conference on May 8 to announce the May 18 Picnic and Hakka Villages Visiting Day in celebration of the International Museum Day.
The press conference was attended by many guests, including THCDC Director-General Ho Chin-liang; Vice Director Chien Ming-hsiung of the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Development Center; Vice Director Chu Mu-hseng of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency’s Pingtung Branch; Director Tien I-min of Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation’s Pingtung Distillery; Director Wu Yao-huang of Taiwan Sugar Corporation Pingtung Branch; Research Fellow Chen Yi-hung of the National Museum of Taiwan History; Chief Tsai Li-fu of the Kenting National Park Management Division; Acting County Mayor Tseng Lung-yang of the Changzhi Township Office; Section Chief Tseng Kuo-feng of the Jhutian Township Office; Legislators Chung Chia-pin, Chuang Jui-hsiung, Su Ching-chuan, and Hsu Fu-Kuei; Hsieh Kuo-yao, Jin Xing Hang Blue-shirt Shop’s person-in-charge; Director Chiou Chu-ying of the Taiwan Banana Research Institute; Vice Director Lin Ta-tsai of the Pingtung Tourism Revitalization Alliance; Director Tseng Chao-chiu of the Changzhi Township Hakka Cultural Experience Center; Executive Director Chen Chin-yueh of the Neipu Township Yangjiyuan Old Street Development Association; Supervisor Li Kung-lu of the Zhutian Township Hakka Cultural Experience Center; and Director Tu Hsin-yu of the Daluguan Cultural Station.
The guests jointly revealed the activities planned for the May 18 event, including a Hakka culture picnic, a theater show, a culinary experience on rice-based food, and camping. Additionally, there will be a short trip to Hakka villages to experience local culture and scenery. By connecting the museum to the villages, International Museum Day highlights Liudui’s history and culture, sharing the stories and memories of Hakka villages with visitors.
The press conference commenced with a certificate of appreciation ceremony by the THCDC. Recipients included Sung Wen-hsien, a calligraphy artist from Meinong District; Tseng Yao-chun, Executive Director of the Liugdui Hakka Games; Hsiao I-hsiung from the Jiadong Township Hsiao’s Historic House; Yang Ching-mou from the Jiadong Township Yang Family Ancestral Hall; Chung Chan-hsiung from the Sinpi Township Chung’s Historic House; and the Taiwan Sugar Corporation Pingtung Branch.
Continuing last year’s International Museum Day celebration’s conception, the THCDC expressed gratitude for the selfless contributions of local residents and enterprises, by relentlessly working on the promotion and preservation of Hakka culture. The THCDC highlighted these contributors’ roles as the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park’s partner and their constant input for innovations.
During the press conference, the Neipu Township Yangjiyuan Old Street Development Association invited a papercutting master to showcase the craft, including the patterns of deer horns, bats, and peaches. In Hakka culture, deer horns symbolize ranks, bats symbolize good fortune, and peaches symbolize longevity. Through these papercuts, participants expressed their wishes for a prosperous future and a successful event on May 18. Additionally, the THCDC prepared picnic bags containing classic Hakka dishes such as salted pork rice burgers, qiba (Hakka mochi), chicken nuggets with kumquat sauce, braised pork with preserved vegetables, leicha bagels, and mesona tea, offering a unique opportunity to experience Hakka cuisine.
THCDC Director-General Ho Chin-liang stated that, in line with this year’s International Museum Day theme – “Museums for Education and Research,” the center has invited local organizations to integrate knowledge about the ecosystem, culture, culinary arts, environment, and language, creating a deeper learning experience for participants. Additionally, the center has expanded the exploration areas to include 12 townships/districts in the Liudui area, moving beyond the boundaries of THCDC. Through short trips to Hakka villages guided by local residents, participants will gain insights into local culture, geography, products, and landscapes.
Emphasizing “Museums for Education and Research,” and building on last year’s initiatives, THCDC continues to focus on the four aspects of the museum: To Discover, To Exhibit, To Treasure, and To Visit. Highlighting Liudui’s culture, THCDC collaborates with 20 local groups and indigenous cultural development centers to develop 12+3 cultural routes, connecting Hakka villages in Liudui with indigenous villages. THCDC aims to showcase the beauty of local culture and foster a greater understanding of Hakka and indigenous cultures among the public.
To further enliven the event, in addition to distributing 1,000 sets of picnic bags on May 18, THCDC will invite 20 food trucks to introduce Hakka fusion cuisine. They will also organize a race competition and set up a ten-meter tall hot air balloon in the park. Additionally, a theater show conducted in Hakka will be presented to create an immersive Hakka language learning experience for the children. Various activities will also be held, including a rice product handmaking workshop, tree planting, and camping. Organizations from Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County, such as the Ocean Conservation Administration and the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters, will also be invited to facilitate environmental education activities and promote the diverse ecology of Liudui Hakka Cultural Park.
