The 60th Liugdui Hakka Games will kick off on Mar. 1 and 2 at Liugdui Memorial Park in Neipu Township of Pingtung County. A pre-event press conference was held on Jan. 16 in Pingtung to promote the Hakka Games.
The press conference was attended by Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米), Director Liao Mei-ling (廖美玲) of the Department of Art, Culture and Communication of the Hakka Affairs Council, Executive Secretary Song Guei-long (宋貴龍) of the Hakka Affairs Commission of the Kaohsiung City Government, Mayor Chung Ching-chen (鍾慶鎮), and other distinguished guests.
According to the Hakka Affairs Council, the Liugdui Hakka Games, known as the “Mini-Olympics of the Dawu Mountain,” is about the story and history of the ancestors in Liugdui who defended their homeland. The sports event brings together townspeople from Hakka settlements across 12 townships to pass down the tradition from generation to generation. Hakka Affairs Council Minister Ku Hsiu-fei (古秀妃) invites the public to join this major annual event and experience the unique culture of Liugdui’s Hakka people.
This year’s Games is organized by Neipu Township. Prior to the Games, a marathon will take place on Feb. 15. The events of the Games include track and field, basketball, and fun competitions such as giant chess, giant soccer, and Hakka lion dance. Aiming to showcase the unique character and hospitality of Neipu Township, the Games is open to nationwide participants.
The Liugdui Hakka Games, with its 60-year history, is the longest-running local sports event in Taiwan. Each year, the festival rotates among the six Hakka settlements of Liugdui (Qiandui, Houdui, Zuodui, Ludui, Zhongdui, and Xianfengdui). This year, it is hosted by Neipu Township in Houdui. The event aims to foster sports development in Liugdui and unite Hakka youths through athletic activities, enhancing not only physical fitness but also promoting the enduring Hakka spirit.
The torch lighting ceremony will take place on Feb. 24, followed by a procession to bring good fortune. The grand opening is scheduled for Mar. 1 at Liugdui Memorial Park, featuring a series of performances. Celebrating ethnic harmony, the lineup of performers include the youngest rock band J Hall, Hakka band Flame Bug, Indigenous band Two Stroke Engine (貳行程樂團), and singer Stan Chen (陳孟賢). Everyone from across the country is invited to experience the warmth of Hakka community in Liugdui. For more information, please visit the event’s official website.
