Second Classics Village-History Reading Session Successfully Concluded!
This session specially invited Associate Professor Chen Chien-Yuan from the Department of Chinese Literature at National Chung Hsing University to engage in an in-depth discussion on the article “Nutrition and Health Delivered to Your Doorstep.” Using the example of Yakult and the “Yakult Mom” delivery system, Professor Chen guided participants to explore how a simple daily probiotic drink reflects layers of imagination and practice surrounding nutrition, health, gender, and consumer culture in Taiwan's urban life.
Professor Chen shared his field observations and writing process, illustrating how he draws on interviews, visual materials, and bodily perception to transform everyday experiences into narratives rich with cultural depth. His insights provided concrete references and inspiration for the village-history authors present. Through the lens of food anthropology, we learned to uncover local cultural contexts and collective memories from the everyday experiences of home kitchens, wet markets, and food mobility.
Writing about food is not only about what we eat; it also reflects our relationship with a place, the rhythms of life, and the intricate web of memory. We sincerely thank Associate Professor Chen for his insightful sharing, and we look forward to everyone bringing this field sensitivity and narrative warmth back to their village-history writing journeys, collectively documenting the everyday life and history unique to our Hakka villages.
