The 61st Liugdui Sports Games is set to take place from Mar. 14 to 15 at Jiadong Junior High School in Jiadong Township, Pingtung County. Highlighting collective community engagement, this year’s edition continues to see enthusiastic participation from athletes across the Liugdui region, showcasing the unity between Hakka culture and sportsmanship.

The press conference for the sports event was attended by Pingtung County Deputy Magistrate Huang Kuo-jung (黃國榮); Director-General Hsieh Sheng-hsin (謝勝信) of the Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC); Inspector Liu Hui-ping (劉慧萍) and Committee Member Liu Shih-tsai (劉仕彩) of the Hakka Affairs Council; President of the Sports Games Lai Wen-i (賴文一); Legislators Chung Chia-pin (鍾佳濱) and Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑); Secretary-General Sung Kuei-lung (宋貴龍) of the Hakka Affairs Commission of the Kaohsiung City Government; Acting Director Li Yun-fang (李昀芳) of the Hakka Affairs Department of the Pingtung County Government; Pingtung County Councilors Chou Pi-yun (周碧雲) and Li Shih-gan (李世淦); Gaoshu Township Mayor Liang Cheng-han (梁正翰); Secretary-General Chang Chao-chung (章朝忠) of the Liugdui Zhongyi Temple; Secretary-General Chung Chen-pin (鍾振斌) of the Liugdui Zhongyi Federation; Executive Director Tseng Yao-chun (曾耀群) of the Liugdui Sports Games; Principal Chang Chien-tang (張鑑堂) of Jiadong Junior High School; and representatives from villages across the Liugdui region.

Director-General Hsieh noted that “Liugdui” refers to the Hakka settlements in present-day Kaohsiung and Pingtung. During the Qing Dynasty in 1721, Hakka immigrants from Guangdong were not permitted to register as residents of Taiwan, which was then administratively under Fujian. However, following the Hakka community’s contribution to defending the Liugdui area during the Chu Yi-kuei Rebellion, the region and its Hakka settlements gained official recognition. Hakka forebears subsequently cultivated the land and built thriving communities, drawing on the abundant resources of the plains and rivers. Over time, many transitioned from tenant farmers to landowners, shaping the Liugdui region into what it is today.

The Sports Games was established to commemorate the hard work of these predecessors and to celebrate the spirit that unites Hakka communities. Held annually on a rotating basis among different townships, the event aims to attract visitors to local villages, stimulate the development of Hakka-related industries and the regional economy, and showcase Liugdui’s cultural heritage and natural landscapes. Director-General Hsieh also invited the public to experience the Hakka spirit in Jiadong Township on Mar. 14 and 15.

Organized this year by Jiadong Township in Pingtung County, the Games began with a badminton competition on Feb. 21, followed by a marathon on Mar. 1, as part of efforts to engage the public with Liugdui’s Hakka culture. The program also features a wide range of events, including track and field, basketball, sport stacking, woodball, and traditional folk games.

With a history spanning 61 years, the Liugdui Sports Games is known as the “Mini Olympics at the Foot of Dawu Mountain.” It is also the longest-running local sports event in Taiwan, held in rotation among the six Liugdui areas each year. Jiadong Township is honored to host the 61st edition. During the opening ceremony, the ceremonial torch—symbolizing the unity of Liugdui communities—will be lit. This year’s main visual theme highlights Liugdui’s journey into a new era, incorporating elements that signify unity, cultural transmission, and renewal.

On Mar. 11, the Games will hold a torch-lighting ceremony followed by a procession through the Liugdui villages. The official opening ceremony will take place on Mar. 14, inviting people nationwide to witness Liugdui’s pride.
