Deputy Minister Chung Kung-chao (鍾孔炤) of the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC) attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lung-jing River (龍頸溪) Environmental Landscape Creation Project with Pingtung County Magistrate Pan Meng-an (潘孟安) in Pingtung’s Neipu Township on May 11.

The Lung-jing River, also known as the mother river in the Liudui region, flows through Pingtung’s townships of Neipu and Zhutian. There are diverse cultural landscapes and rich historical resources in the Hakka area along the river.

Deputy Minister Chung said that the Lung-jing River has profound meaning to local Hakka residents because the area along the Lung-jing River was the earliest settlement of Hakka ancestors that later expanded into the Liudui region.

Chung explained the Lung-jing River Environmental Landscape Creation Project that was proposed by the Pingtung County Government aims to promote Hakka culture in a sustainable way, boost the industry in the region, and reconstruct the connectivity of waterfront living environment.

Created by the flow of the Lung-jing River, the alluvial Pingtung Plain has nurtured many generations in the local Hakka community. The Deputy Minister hopes the construction can go forward smoothly with townspeople’s support to boost the development of the region.

Subsidized by HAC, the Pingtung County Government carried out the Lung-jing River Environmental Landscape Creation Project to evaluate the natural and cultural resources on the riverbank and connect the recreational sites, for instance the riverbank park and sports park, to accelerate tourism momentum.
