The Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center (THCDC) has reached another milestone in its publishing efforts, with eight of its Hakka-related books recognized in the 2026 Award for Encouraging the Publication of Historical and Cultural Publications. THCDC Director-General Hsieh Sheng-hsin (謝勝信) attended the award ceremony, hosted by Taiwan Historica, on Sept. 18, to accept the honors. Two of books won awards of excellence, while the other six received honorable mentions.

 THCDC launched the “Hakka Village History Project” in 2021 to encourage local residents to document the stories of their community. To date, THCDC has published 20 local gazetteers. This year, four books won the award, including “Chronicles of the Battlefield and Turmoil in Shitan: Tracing the Footsteps of Luo Puyun,” which won an award of excellence; “Contending with Water for Land in Dalukuan: Stone Lions Protecting Water and Securing Peace for the People,” “Glory of Mei-Ho: Shining Baseball Years,” and “Strolling Through Dahu’s Streets and Villages: Recreating Old Times Through Vintage Photos,” which won honorable mentions.

 In the realm of Hakka music and culture studies, “Echoes of Hakka Sounds: Hakka Bayin and Tea-Picking Opera during the Japanese Colonial Period” and “Graceful Images: A Century of Hakka Women’s Journey” were among the recipients of awards of excellence. In addition, “Biang - Jiangˊ: Multiple Facets of Taiwan Hakka” and picture book “A Special Gift” received honorable mentions.

THCDC Director-General Hsieh said that the recognition of the eight books is a testimony to the concerted efforts of the Center and its partners in preserving, studying, and promoting Hakka culture. He added that THCDC will continue to deepen its work in Hakka culture and heritage, leaving a richer legacy for the future generation.
