Hakka culture is well known for its “stiff neck” spirit, which was especially revealed during the war against Japanese invasion of Taiwan in 1895. Starting from August 20, 2016 onwards, the Hakka Cultural Development Center of Hakka Affairs Council will hold the Special Exhibition for “Righteous Spirit-1895 War against Japanese Invasion of Taiwan" at the Miaoli Park.

Defeated in the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, the Qing Empire was forced to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki to ceded Taiwan to Japan. When this news reached Taiwan, many militias, most of which were formed by the Hakka ethnic groups, were immediately rallied to fight against the Japanese invaders. The anti-Japanese battles erupted one after another from the north to the south of Taiwan. This Special Exhibition has borrowed many precious historical materials, documents and artifacts from the Institute of Taiwan History of Academia Sinica, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Taiwan Literature Museum, the National Taiwan Museum, the National Museum of Taiwan History, and the Museum of Asia Survey Company. Organized under four themes, namely "Japanese Invasion of Taiwan," "Cession of Taiwan," "Hakka Militias and Spirit of Yimin," and "Cultural Memory of Hakka Spirit," this Special Exhibition wishes to lead the audience back to the history of the war in 1895 by probing those battles in Dahukou, Anping Township, Jianbeshan, Baguashan, Buyelo, and Hoshozhuan and introducing those Hakka militia heroes, including Wu Tang-xing, Xu Xiang, Jiang Shao-zu, Hu Jia-yu, Huang Niang-sheng, Xiao Guang-ming, Zhang A-geng, Dai Dern-tan, Lee Yi-san, Zhong Shun-jun, Qiu Feng-yang, and Zhong Fa-chun. Using the interactive multimedia devices to present the historical themes, the Special Exhibition will be lively and interesting, completely breaking the stereotype that history is dull and serious.

Through this Special Exhibition, we hope to bring back your memories of the war, the loyalty and bravery of Hakka ethnic groups, the Hakka spirit of unity and cohesion, and the Yimin belief. Starting from August 20, 2016, the exhibition will be held at 2nd Special Exhibition Hall of Miaoli Park.
