In response to UNESCO’s World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on October 27 each year, in 2021 we are again rolling out the theme exhibition “2021 Taiwan Precious Music Recordings Online Exhibition – Beautiful Sound Made by Fellow Hakka.” Information on the exhibition is also posted on the UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage website to show the world a number of precious Hakka musical materials from Taiwan’s history, including recordings of traditional opera and popular tunes from the Japanese colonial era, music gathered on field trips during the Folk Song Collected Movement as well as brand new compositions from contemporary composers, in the hope of sharing the beauty of Taiwanese Hakka music with the world through this audiovisual digital collection.
Through collaboration between the Ostasien-Institut e.v. Bonn, Germany, the Hakka Affairs Council’s Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and the National Development Council’s National Archives Administration, the curatorial team from National Taiwan Normal University’s Digital Archive Center for Music has specially selected a series of significant Hakka music tracks, images and artifacts, with dual-language Chinese and English exposition to introduce the world to the diverse development of Taiwanese Hakka music and the Taiwanese social history and the transnational history of science and technology that it reflects. It includes Japanese colonial era “guchui” music performed by Hakka musicians, Beiguan opera and Guangdong popular music records, reformed tea-picking opera performed by Columbia Records recording artist Sun Sun (Lau Chheng-hiong), a previously unreleased a capella Hakka folk song sung by national folk music legend Lai Bi-xia, and Hakka songs from Meinong and Miaoli from the Folk Music Collected Movement.
