Origin of the exhibition (zanˋlam ianˇhiˋ)

Liudui has developed its unique culture and various stories in the past 300 years. The Liudui Games are a unique cultural memory of the Hakka village in south Taiwan. Liudui has experienced three different changes in its social context and background over different eras; from the Liudui military organization in the Qing Dynasty to the popularity of sports during the Japanese rule, and then the Liudui Games formed after the war. With different cohesion mechanisms, the game has become a way to unite Liudui people for the past 300 years.

Explore the sporting memory of Liudui (tamˋqimˇ liugˋduiˊ iun tung gi i)

Under the pressure of natural disasters and population growth, the Liudui ancestors in the Qing Dynasty crossed the sea to reclaim land in Taiwan. In order to resist foreign aggression, they spontaneously organized civilian groups and gradually formed the system of Liudui. This gradually disintegrated during the era of Japanese rule. This is the time when all types of sports were introduced in Taiwan through school education and sports competitions became a social event and the basis of the Liudui games later on.

At the beginning of the development of the Games (iun tung fi fadˋzanˋ ziiˊ cuˊ)

During the period of Japanese rule, the continuous development of sports popularity coupled with the fact that aspiring young people found that the spirit of unity of Liudui was no longer the same as before, they called and asked for the support of various seniors to open the first Liudui games in 1948. However, the preparation of previous games was not always smooth. Once it was suspended for 18 years due to political, economic and other factors. Fortunately, thanks to the funds and efforts of the concerned public, it has continued to this day.

Faith in the Loyalty temple and the sacred fire tour (zungˊ ngi ciiˇ xin ngiongˋiung siin foˋ sunˇ liˊ)

The Loyalty temple is closely related to the Liudui sports games because the games were jointly held by the temple and Liudui rural areas at the beginning. The flame tour of the games also started from the Loyalty temple. After Zhongyong Gong of the temple joined the tour in 2006, the motivation to unite Liudui's identity was strengthened. The tour of the holy flame not only symbolizes the unity of various townships but also re-establishes the boundary of the Liudui area as it passes through the site.

The Liudui Sports Games Kicks off (liugˋ duiˊ iun tung fi koiˊ siiˋ loˊ)

In the early Liudui sports games, track and field were the main events because the venues were easy to set. Later, ball games were gradually introduced. Then, in order to increase people's participation, fun folk competitions with Hakka elements were also included. Through physical practice, people could understand the Liudui Hakka culture and strengthen their self-identity. The Liudui sports games became an important display of the emotional connection and cohesion of Liudui residents.

Using the picture book The Secrets of Liudui Sports Games produced by the Hakka cultural development center of the Hakka Affairs Council as a clue, we will lead the public into the magical world of fairytales. From the story in which "the great demon devours the residents' memory and intends to prevent the launch of the Liudui sports games but as long as we remember the origin and significance of the games, the culture will never disappear", we could think about the importance of paying attention to traditional culture and inheritance.
